Zurich Camp 2020

October, 2020

Making and playing with friends are two things that children do naturally and are skills that we ordinarily take for granted. Yet for many children with special needs and related learning differences, these two aspects of childhood do not come easily. The effects of specific learning differences may, in fact, preclude children from interacting appropriately with their peers. They are challenged to acquire the “unspoken” rules of social behavior and poor self-esteem, low frustration tolerance and problems with anger and/or aggression are a constant source of concern for parents and teachers.

ASK Bilingual Camp is an inclusive summer program, dedicated to offering a special haven for children and young adults aged 5-24 who have Learning Differences and Special Educational Needs. The fully integrated programme allows children to develop their social skills, creativity and learning through fun games and activities, which are structured according to age and their skill level. Our highly qualified staff include psychologists, experienced specialist teachers, counselors, speech therapists, ABA therapists, art therapist, music therapist and a nurse.

Please be advised that ASK camp will be strictly following the Federal guidelines to safeguard the safety of the campers as well as our staff and volunteers. ASK camp safety guidelines will be provided in the parents’ welcome pack nearer the time.

If you still have options for camps this year I really recommend ASK All Special Kids – Geneva / Headquarters camps in Geneva.  These camps differ from all others in that they provide a truly inclusive environment for every type of kid. Whether your kid is able-bodied, disabled, socially or educationally challenged, this camp provides the most amazing and unique opportunity for them to learn how to get on and have fun with other kids whatever their level.  If your kid has a serious disability this camp is also equipped to support them.  I can’t recommend ASK highly enough!

We have found the summer program at ASK very accommodating for children with many varied needs and skills. Most impressively, ASK Camp is able to get all these children to somehow work and play collectively. In a world in which inclusiveness is still a big challenge, we find this approach by ASK not only extremely progressive but also quite unique in Geneva. ASK camp is even able to get Ryan to forget about his favorite iPad for the entire day and get him focused on a structured program from morning to the end!

ASK summer camp has been a lifesaver for my family. Indeed, for the first time in nine years, my daughter Victoria felt totally accepted, that she could be herself and would not be expelled if she misbehaved. She was not the trouble maker anymore. At camp, she learned to control her emotions better and to make friends from various backgrounds and special needs. After three weeks of camp, she asked to come back next year. When I asked her what she liked most about camp, she said: “everything!”. As a mother, it was the first time in nine years as well that I did not have to listen to a 20-minute debriefing on my daughter’s behavior every evening when I came to pick her up or received a phone call during the day asking me to come and get her because she had misbehaved. Her special needs were acknowledged, accepted, and the camp coordinator and volunteers worked with her on getting better and celebrated her strengths and talents. Thank you ASK, from the bottom of my heart!

ASK camps are amazing for all children – they are a special place where everyone is respected and appreciated. Its a safe place. The organizers are amazing and the volunteers outstanding – including Nico Phoenix he he he. Many thanks to Steve and Joy for creating an outstanding camp.

As the Head Camp Coordinator, I have to say I am biased!!! However, I feel so blessed and grateful to be a part of something that brings so much acceptance, compassion and “joy” to so many!!!

ASK has been such an important part in our lives, allowing my son to have a wonderful time in a perfect environment and allowing me as a parent to have time to keep doing my thing when school is out, with peace of mind. The dedication of all the staff involved is amazing.

Dear ASK Summer Camp Organizers, I am writing to thank you and your excellent team for the fantastic Camp experience that both of my Children had this year. My Son, (12) as a “camper” and my Daughter (15) as a camper/volunteer. It was their best experience so far of a “Summer Camp”. My Son who has anxiety issues, came home happy and laughing each day, eager to go back and get involved, he loved having different “buddies” and was very happy to make new friends. He really wants to go again next year, as a parent is was such a relief to know that both of my Children (for different reasons) were so energized and positive about their experience with you. My Daughter, hopes to be a teacher and she is enjoying her experience so much that she asked to volunteer for an extra week, normally I have difficulty getting her out of bed before 10.00 am when she is on vacation so this action alone speaks volumes for your program ;-).

ASK Bi-lingual Summer Day Camp – come and play

  • social communication skills development through role play
  • arts exploration and self-expression through different mediums to encourage imagination and creativity
  • sensory play to enhances learning through hands-on activities that stimulate the child’s senses

  • multi-sensory games which encourage team building, group interaction and learn conflict resolution
  • weekly outings to explore nature and local culture
  • using games and activities to make learning fun and improve literacy and numeracy skills for children having difficulties at school

Social Communication Skills

This program teaches children the fundamental social communication skills, using social stories and role play to learn sharing, cooperation, conflict resolution through team building exercises. Improving social communication skills will lead to children learning to understand each other’s differences and to learn self-acceptance, which in turn instill empathy in each child and build life-long self-confidence. The nurturing camp environment encourages the children to have positive peer interactions, which develops self-discovery and a sense of social accomplishment. Multi-sensory tools and different art mediums are used to allow children to unleash their creativity and self-expression to discover a sense of self and to further develop their self-confidence.

Learning and Improving Literacy Skills

Statistics prove that it is imperative that children with learning differences keep reading during the summer months to avoid the so-called ‘summer brain drain’ phenomenon. At ASK summer camp, children will have ‘thematic’ books and activities to share and enjoy. They might read with support, by themselves or read to others as appropriate, but the goal is to make reading and learning fun. They will be encouraged to share ideas about each week’s focus theme, and to strengthen their language and literacy skills through upbeat interactions with their buddies and group mates. There will also be opportunities to produce graphics and written reactions to the themes at their individual level of learning development. Learning activities will be designed to encourage the campers to have fun with the themes and be celebrated/acknowledged for their participation and effort.

By special request for children having learning difficulties at school, we can also offer one to one tutoring in a specific area, such as literacy or numeracy, to allow them to consolidate what they have learned during the school year, and help them feel more confident in the next school year. This offer is limited to staff availability and at an additional cost. Parents must provide school and other reports one month in advance, allowing the tutor time to prepare based on the needs of the child. The one on one tutoring sessions focused on building added confidence for a child based on a sense of better understanding and mastery in a skill area. Please inquire via email if this service is available during the week or weeks you wish to enroll your child in the summer camp.
