School-based Interventions for Secondary School Students with ADHD
by Prof. Steven Evans, Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Center for Intervention Research, Ohio University
- Attendees will understand best practices for identifying the impairment associated with the ADHD that can be used for determining how to help these students succeed.
- Attendees will learn the variety of approaches available to help adolescents with ADHD and be able to identify those with evidence supporting their benefit, interventions that appear to have minimal benefit, and those that have not yet been adequately evaluated.
- Attendees will understand the barriers and advantages for providing interventions in schools compared to other settings.
Adolescents with ADHD experience many challenges associated with being successful at school. They exhibit serious academic and social impairment that can increase their risk for problematic behaviors such as substance use, delinquency, dropping out of school, and failing grades. Teachers and other school professionals are in an ideal situation to help these students. This presentation will inform attendees about how best to help adolescents with ADHD and determine appropriate and effective school-based interventions. Although many interventions are available, this presentation will inform professionals about which are the most likely to be helpful and how they can be feasibly implemented in the school setting.
Dr. Evans is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Center for Intervention Research in Schools at Ohio University.
He is a clinical psychologist and former public school teacher who conducts intervention development and evaluation research to learn the most effective approaches to helping youth with ADHD and related problems.
Dr. Evans has published five books and over 150 articles and chapters. He is the founding editor of the journal School Mental Health and has developed some of the latest school-based services for adolescents with ADHD.
School-Based Intervention for Elementary School Students with ADHD
by Prof. George DuPaul, College of Education, Lehigh University
- Attendees will understand academic, behavioral, and social impairment associated with ADHD that serve as targets for classroom-based intervention.
- Attendees will know the variety of treatment approaches available to children with ADHD and be able to identify those with evidence supporting their benefit and those that have not yet been adequately evaluated.
- Attendees will understand the impact of school treatment for ADHD on student academic
and behavior functioning
Children with ADHD experience many challenges associated with being successful at school. They exhibit serious academic and social impairment that can increase their risk for failing grades, academic underachievement, peer rejection, and school exclusion. Thus, classroom teachers must be prepared to address these challenges by using evidence-based instructional and behavior management strategies. Although many treatments are available, this presentation will inform school professionals regarding academic and behavior intervention strategies that have research support and are feasible for use by teachers and other school personnel.
Dr. George DuPaul is Professor of School Psychology and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Education at Lehigh University.
He has been an author or co-author on over 240 journal articles and book chapters as well as 10 books and two videos related to ADHD and pediatric school psychology.
